The role of forests is continuously growing and diversifying. Starting from production of wood, they are nowadays seen as important reservoirs of carbon and biodiversity. Traditionally the goal of NFI has been to provide updated information about nation´s forest resources focusing in timber volumes. Over time NFIs enlarged their scopes and new variables were collected step by step. Furthermore, after the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 although NFI data use for national purposes still remains, international reporting is becoming more and more important.

In this context the Spanish National Forest Inventory (SFI), since its third cycle, applies a new methodology to estimate new variables related to forest biodiversity. SFI is also actively involved in different international forums and networks that aim the harmonization and comparability of the available information on forests.

With this framework, and through this project between the INIA and the MAGRAMA, CIFOR gives scientific and technical support to the National Forest Inventory.
